Balance Lost
Notes:
I always want listeners to take their own interpretation from my lyrics so I'm a little reticent to provide my own meaning in case it prevents people from hearing it in their own way, however for the purposes of Nur Ein I will describe my intentions.
This song is meant to be about an ageing superstar and observing how they grapple with not being as all-conquering as they once were, partly by recognising that that level of success might actually be a little unhealthy for a person. The narrator's perspective is partly commiserating with the subject, but also noting how seeing another person's gradual decline from outside helps us come to terms with the fact that we're all getting older. There are various glass metaphors to illustrate these points throughout.
I wouldn't normally make such a long song for Nur Ein, and I'm aware that the intro is quite long before any singing arrives. I decided it would be okay to use this opportunity to try something more progressive that wholeheartedly embraces the challenge, and also since the judges only have 5 official entries to listen to a slightly longer running time would be acceptable. I hope you feel the same way, and apologies for being too indulgent if not!

(Time signature: 5/4)
Coming up from the underground
Now your industry is ablaze
Agitate, taking by surprise
Everything I want
Daylight raid
(Time signature: 4/4)
Looking back in the day
It'll never be the same
In so many ways
You fight against the change
It's hard to believe
The difference between now and then
When you're up on a peak
You're running out of oxygen
(Time signature: 6/8)
Stare at the screen and I'm on the other side
Haunting the two-way glass
Secrets you'll never hide
Now you're not as strong as you look
Brittle from the earthquake as it shook
(Time signature: 15/16)
In my youth
I thought I knew the sea
Now this fading captain's aiding me
You could ride the storm
But now the sea is calm
And what you thought were eggshells
Turned out to be shards of glass
Is your grip too strong?
The world was in your palm
You might have thought they loved you
But it seems the moment passed
(Time signature: 4/4)
Looking back in the day
It'll never be the same
In so many ways
You fight against the change
It's hard to believe
The difference between now and then
When you're up on a peak
You're running out of oxygen
