Once More With Feeling

On the day that I turned five
I barely cared to be alive
The toys and presents all seemed fake
But then my dad brought out the cake
When they sang that birthday song
It sent me a-reeling
I cried to the assembled throng,
“Once more with feeling!”
As a man, I’d go to bars (Once more with feeling)
To try to salve my psychic scars (Once more with feeling)
The bottle gives a loving hug (Once more with feeling)
But I had found another drug (Once more with feeling)
Though in my head was shifting sand
Music was healing
So I told the barroom band,
“Once more with feeling!”
I know I'm dancing toward the grave (Once more with feeling)
So I went to church, my soul to save (Once more with feeling)
The preacher put me straight to sleep (Once more with feeling)
Then I heard the hymn, and glory be! (Once more with feeling)
My soul became as light as air
And I hit the ceiling
I hollered at that organ player,
“Once more with feeling!”
So when you put me in a hole
And the Devil comes to take my soul
I only ask one simple thing
Give those funeral bells a ring
I’ll claw my way through seven hells
When I hear them pealing
Pop back up and tell them bells
“Once more with feeling!”
