TIRED OF TALKING
Micah Sommersmith
When you ask me why we never talk,
well, all that I can say is that I’m tired
of talking in circles and never saying anything and tired
of talking over each other’s voices, over each other’s heads,
and I’m tired of taking sides in every useless fight
and acting so self-righteous when I don’t care if I’m right
and I’m tired of talking about how tired of talking I’ve become
and I know that you’re tired too, so let’s keep mum-mum-mum-mum-mum-mum
and pretend it’s normal to feel like you’re drowning all the time
and the one - the one person who maybe could save you has their foot on your neck
and there’s nothing I can say to make anything okay,
though I suppose I could have tried, but I’m so fucking tired,
just so tired of talking about how tired of talking I’ve become
and I know that you’re tired too, so let’s keep mum-mum-mum-mum-mum-mum
mum-mum-mum-mum-mum
mum-mum-mum-mum-mum
mum-mum-mum-mum-mum-
mumbling to each other from the edges of the bed
just like sister and brother in the back of a minivan
deploying all our tricks to get into each other’s heads
for no better reason than we know we can,
so when you ask me why we never talk
well all that I can say is that I’m tired.
