Nick Soma - The Handbook

When in need of instructions on how to go on,
Consult the Handbook to guide you along.

Step one, conjure up a magic well.
(See page 90 for how to perform such a spell.)
Step two, take a bone of a rabid dog,
Seven adders' eggs and the legs of a bullfrog,
Twenty-two grubs from beneath the soil,
Grind it all to a paste and bring milk to a boil.
Step three, stir the paste in, say your incantation,
As shown on page 12, so the spirits awaken.

Step four, when the potion has started to gel,
Empty your kettle into the well.
When in need of instructions on how to go on,
Consult the Handbook to guide you along.

Step five, be patient, it may take a while;
When haze is forming, take a bottle of bile,
And then pour it into the abyss too,
So the spirit you seek may come to you.

Step six, light a candle, stare into the flame.
And step seven, call out your spirit's name.
When in need of instructions on how to go on,
Consult the Handbook to guide you along.

(musical representation of spirit being summoned)

Take special care in which spirit you summon,
Cases of accidents are not uncommon.
And if it's taken possession of you,
Then there is nothing the Handbook can do.

Dear reader or spirit possessing them, know
That the Handbook will help you wherever you go.
When in need of instructions on how to go on,
Consult the Handbook to guide you along.

the lyrics are a wonderfully fun take on the challenge and the music complements their mysterious fantasy elements very well. The layered vocals perfectly evoke the spellcasting vibe, and I love the intro and outro. The only place this falls down a little is that I can't really imagine myself wanting to return to it as frequently as some of the songs I've ranked higher, but I love that this is the direction you took the challenge.

haunt me with those intro vocals, hot damn. This made Deirdre feel like she was riding through a desert on a horse with no name and it made me feel like I was on an old wooden boat

Ye olde Renaissance Faire melodie doesn’t sound like every other Song Fight/Nur Ein song, so I’ll give it that. Also, I was laughing my ass off over old Jethro Tull videos on Youtube the night before the songs were posted, so I was in a good mood for hearing this type of song. I feel like I’ve said this about half the songs already, but I guess “the handbook” makes people want to write a lot of long, detailed instructions… this could have been done in half the length and kept the same ideas, it’s not an actual instructional guide, so you don’t need to put in every single lyrical detail you’ve included here, and the music isn’t changing enough to justify it. I liked the sound of the guitar a lot, and sort of wish you hadn’t used that nice musical backing on making what is essentially a Halloween novelty song. Theremin-ish synth is nice, the creepy child vocals are very nicely done--thanks for explaining that, I was wondering how you had access to a bunch of ghost-children. Enjoyable but not something I would probably revisit.

This is so creepy! I love the aesthetic, and the only note I have is that I wish it was a little more darker. Maybe a slide guitar for that dark country rock sound, or use that voice that's in step 6 and put it throughout so it has a more sinister feel. Or add more creepy children voices, I suppose, but I think you used the correct amount of creepy children for this brew of a song.

I LOOOOOOOVE this song. As far as I’m concerned, this is the best combination of challenge and title. I love how it is from the point of view of the handbook (check page 90, etc is a really nice touch). The music is utterly delightful; laid back but still with a good forward momentum. I love the sounds you use throughout the arrangement. The summoning sound and melody very much reminds me of music from dr. Horribles sing along blog. I like your voice, though at times the tuning goes out, and the declamation of the syllablesdoesnt work out the best. I think both of those could be fixed by further takes to really gel where your voice needs to go on each line.
