Tongue Twister

LyricsShow lyrics

Cold Comfort
By Ross Durand

There lies a bad guy, spent his life on the run
But he never got away from the things that he'd done
And in the end they shot him down, you know, to even the score
His dyin' words, he said, "At least I ain't runnin' no more."

The dirt six feet down will bring a cold cold comfort
As it folds him in for his rest in peace
And it takes him away from his worldly worries, right or wrong
The dirt six feet down will bring a cold cold comfort when he's gone

Here lies an old man after life all alone
Cold in the heart, cold to the bone
Pushed people away, we never knew what for
As he died he thought, "At least I won't be lonely no more."

The dirt six feet down will bring a cold cold comfort
As it folds him in for his rest in peace
And it takes him away from his worldly worries, right or wrong
The dirt six feet down will bring a cold cold comfort when he's gone

There lies Mrs. Mary, messed around in Mississippi
And she mighta missed the merry misses sippin' their tea
But she messed with Mrs.' mister
And she missed the Mrs.' muster
Mrs. Mary went a missin' in the mighty Mississippi

And there lies me, and there lies you
Will we die needin' comfort for the things that we do
Cause I ain't got no idea what death has in store
Just hope I don't die happy I ain't livin' no more

The dirt six feet down will bring a cold cold comfort
As it folds us in for our rest in peace
And it takes us away from our worldly worries, right or wrong
The dirt six feet down will bring a cold cold comfort when we're gone

I love this! I have to admit that this doesn’t punch me in the gut the way your last two songs have. This is just gold old story telling. 5 years ago I would have told you I don’t like this genre. Between my best friend Stewboss and a couple of excellent Wilco albums in the last 5 years, this genre is among my most listened to these days. This is solid! This is also an interesting play in the game. I wouldn’t expect this in the finals with the audience of 25 (or whatever the count is). For the audience of Niv, Roy, J$, Noah, and Paco this might play very well. I think you have the best tongue twister of the fight for it s worth. It’s very twisty and it furthers the story. Bravo! I won’t be surprised if you win. I will be surprised if you don’t advance.

Yes. Now this is the sound of a man stepping up to the plate. Literally, the only criticism I can think of for this is that there are occasions where you try to fit too many words into the line (and I'm not referring to the middle section which I'm assuming is the tongue twister bit - this is done very well - it's the verse following that part). Otherwise, my lack of things to say about the song is purely becuase I'm thoroughly enjoying it.

Of course, (at the risk of sounding like glennny) I very much enjoy the WSA song this week, but I'm envisioning an ADD vs Ross final off the back of this fight. The only thing to upset that prediction is Jeff's possible lack of challenge meeting but I'm open to being corrected if there's something I've missed.

--- the tongue twister bridge is thematically linked, but i feel its still somewhat incidental ---

Four vignettes for Clint Eastwood to direct. Your stories each fit within four lines, neatly folded. They stack like caskets in a pile to be buried come the next chorus. Mrs. Mary, her story is twisted, but it gets her to the same place (well, her cold comfort comes from the mighty Mississippi). Your vocal performance is the most franticly tongue twisted, the leads throughout support the plots (or...they're just so damn nice who cares anyway?), and your production is punchy and convincing. There’s really nothing I can criticize here (OK, except a nitpick about the sudden fade at the end of "Just hope I don't die happy I ain't livin' no more"...I would have overlapped with the coming chorus, perhaps panned out of the way instead of a fade). Bravo.
