The Handbook - Hot Pink Halo (shadow entry)

*

It's Sunday night and
You've got nothing to do
Except forget about the dishes
While you're trawling youtube
You wanna write a song but
You've the algorithm blues
Then your eye catches the sidebar
It's a project you can't refuse

Find yourself some paper
And tear it down to size
Fold it with a piece of bone
Then stab it through the spine
Three times
Sew it together
Tie a knot in the centre
That's how you make
That's how you make
That's how you make
That's how you make the handbook

If those sewing instructions are as
Clear as mud then
Try it like this
Before you come unstuck
Take a needle through the centre hole
From the inside and
Leave the end for later
When it'll be tied
Bring it back on through that hole
You made at the top
Pass it through the bottom
And come back to the middle
Where we stop
And pull it taut
Pick up those two hanging ends
And tie yourself a knot
Around the thread in the centre
That's how you sew the handbook

What you do next is up to you
Maybe a) draw a picture or
b) write a list or two

Or take another piece of paper and
Tear it down to size
Score it nice and sharp
Then stab it through the spine
Three times
Sew it together
Tie a knot in the centre
Paint some outer space or
Write a song like you meant ta
That's how you make
That's how you make
That's how you make
That's how you make the handbook

like your last song, I really enjoyed your vocals and the general sonic landscape. Those mellotron / organ sounds and the twangy guitar sound great together. A little more solid rhythmically too. Enjoyed this.

Quirky and interesting. I would have brought them/her/him(?) back into the game. The best of the shadows, imo.

Melodically and rhythmically, this reminds me a lot of your “Right Town, Wrong Address.” I mentioned at some point to the other judges that I kind of expected you to make a song about bookbinding based on this title, and I wasn’t disappointed. “The algorithm blues” is a great phrase. The chorus is catchy enough, but like I mentioned in Nick Soma’s review, I really don’t think it’s necessary to put quite so much detail into the lyrics. These are some of the best vocals I’ve heard from you, I think. Having the fake orchestral backing stuff drop out in more places would go a long ways towards making the arrangement feel more dynamic--there are a lot of held notes constantly and not a lot of rhythmic shifts.

Way to call me out in the first few lines. It is hard to describe how to bind a book in song form, but I kinda can imagine it, and it's a fun idea. Some of the vocal lines are out of tune, but I think it's more the melody and harmony are off instead of being a vocal line that's flat or sharp. I think the voices have a lot of potentially for very beautiful harmonies, so if you can put a little bit more care into those harmonies, I think it'll pay off much more than focusing anywhere else. Please give me more book songs! I used to work in a library, and always wanted to do more book things, so let me live through your experiences.

I really like the take of making a handbook. I think your vocals are sung too quietly and mixed too loud. Like others this fight, your doubled vocals betray pitchiness. Sing out, and bring the resonance of your singing higher in your head. It’s as simple as imaging the sound coming out of the top of your head; it will give you more control and a better focused sound. If you’re worried about clipping, turn down the gain on your mic. If your worried about roommates.... eh, screw em. Your art is valuable. At the chorus, I would have done multiple vocal tracks so you can hold “make” a little longer, allowing the vocal lines to overlap. That would have been a cool effect.
