We sailed out to Bitter Island
To see what we could see
Was left of Finley Lighthouse
The beacon of the sea

It was years since it had been there
Its memory just a ghost
Of deeds and travels long forgotten
Way out upon the rocky coast

I sailed out to Bitter Island
In 19 aught and three
To be a lighthouse keeper

My assignment was the Finley lighthouse
So grand and shiny as a gem
This world, you see, was not for me
But that lighthouse took me in
