Berkeley Social Scene featuring Micah Sommersmith

Glennny: guitar, vocals
Ken: guitar
Martin: bass, vocals
Geech: drums, vocals
Micah: vocals

Because dying and going to a good bar shouldn't be mutually exclusive

---

Martin
I just had so many run-ins with the law
In and out of prison, oh man those things I saw
And now they say it’s over - I hope to find my way
I’m looking for that special light today

Geech
If you don’t know what you’re doing
But you know it’s time to go
Come and visit us in the after
Down at Pleasant Row

Glennny
I was never satisfied with anything I did
Accomplishments and goals - they might as well stay hid
And now the clock’s run out - it’s all finished and done
I’m leaving on a trip up towards the sun

Geech
If you don’t know what you’re doing
But you know it’s time to go
After you pass through the pearly gates, well
Come down to Pleasant Row

And you’ll find that when you’re here
All your pain has disappeared

And It doesn’t matter if you went to church every week
You’re gonna leave this world down to the meek

Pleasant Row
Pleasant Row

Micah*
My daddy was tough and I respected him a lot
He came over from Mexico full of American thoughts
At the end when he got sick, well I held his hand so close
I said, “Papi sabes que te quiero siempre. Al cielo con Dios.” *// "Daddy, you know I'll always love you. Go to heaven with God."

Geech
If you don’t know what you’re doing
But you know it’s time to go
Once you get your wings, my friend, well
Come down to Pleasant Row

You’ve got to let your past fall away
Now that you’ve had your life
Come join us here for some good times
At Pleasant Row tonight

It's cool to hear everyone contributing to lead vocals on this one. I feel Glen's voice in particular feels more comfortable in the lower register. This seems to be a musical step back from last week's entry which was full of interesting flourishes. This one chugs along at a medium tempo, and saves most of its interesting bits for after the 2 minute mark when my interest is seriously starting to wane. If I were your producer in the control room (yeah, I'm doing that thing again) I'd say pick up the pace about 15bpm, cut a couple of sections, and play your instruments in a more imaginative way - more rhythmic ideas, guitar arpeggios, instrument interplay. You guys have been doing this long enough to know just strumming along for 4 minutes is gonna sound like you're phoning it in. I hope that's not too harsh, but I know you are all capable of more excitement and invention in your music. You bust out some decent harmonies though.

Brown Word: Similar vibe to the BSS tune, but this has many of the instrumental embellishments that their tune lacks, such as the guitar arpeggios, additional synths, etc. Can i hear handclaps too? Sorry for the short review. This was decent.

I like the guitars. Your mix translated better on the shitty work speakers than most entries. The vocal didn't seem to sit in there perfectly for me, though. Maybe a hair dry? I liked how the foreign language line was used. How many of those lines did you have, by the way? Solid but ultimately a middle of the road song.
