Entry from Shock Value in Nur Ein XIV.

Make a song with quiet and loud parts -- like every Pixies song you love. This can mean crescendos or decrescendos, sudden loud noises, whatever, just make good use of dynamics.

Shock Value
by Boffo Yux Dudes

It's better that I want to get
The Doctors told me not to fret
The Values are attenuating
Muscle pain extenuating
One way or another, I'll be out of here tonight

I stretch tight against the straps
His rapt attention starts to lapse
The sheets now hold a lake of sweat
Pain stabs me like a bayonette
One way or another, I'll be out of here tonight

(Chorus)
I don't recall signing the note
The room grew dark and then they wrote
Upon a clipboard - tied down to a chaaaaaaaaaair.

I thought this was a nasty joke.
While I was sleeping - now awoke
and found the dream is just a huge nightmaaaaaaaare

No idea what they want from me
Their cold black eyes stare back and see
My body tossed, like from a catapult

The voltage goes up one more notch
as people squint and then they watch
For some sign of a positive result

(Chorus)
I don't recall signing the note
The room grew dark and then they wrote
Upon a clipboard - tied down to a chaaaaaaaaaair.

I thought this was a nasty joke.
While I was sleeping - now awoke
and found the dream is just a huge nightmaaaaaaaare

The dials go up
But I don't even care
My hair stands up
What little is there

(Chorus)
I don't recall signing the note
The room grew dark and then they wrote
Upon a clipboard - tied down to a chaaaaaaaaaair.

I thought this was a nasty joke.
While I was sleeping - now awoke
and found the dream is just a huge nightmaaaaaaaare

This goes up to 11

OK, this one has some dynamics at last! Those choruses really kick in. And it's at an overall better volume level than your lovely Zamboni song, too. I enjoyed the retro drum machine sounds in the quiet verse but on the whole the song didn't really draw me in, the rhythm and melody of the chorus vocals in particular didn't really work for me.

I like the departure from your usual style. The tuneful vocal fits well in the song, especially in the “out of here tonight” parts. I liked the quiet sections more than the loud ones.

this was a fun song. I like like the intro a lot. The lyrics painted a cool picture. Is this also about Milgram? Or about an alien abduction? Dynamics: present.

I swear I don’t understand why people would Yoda the first line of a song. (unless it’s a Weird Al Star Wars parody) Just use your best Yoda voice, and read your first line. Don’t set the tone of your song that way. It’s more annoying when the song overall isn’t bad. Interesting story, and the vocals didn’t seem bored this time around. It held my interest all the way through, but annoyed I was.

I was not ready for this intense chorus, as catchy as it is noisy. Those falsetto screams are worth a lot of bombasticness points, obv. The Ratatat-style guitarmonies in the second verse are very nice.

Inflatable Vegatables: I'd see this musical, too. Love the dynamic vocal delivery, especially the contrast between the sneering chorus and the introspection of the 3rd verse. I dig it.
