Shadow

First time I saw you, well, you know you caught my eye
And to this very day I still wonder why
Second time that we would meet I saw you flash a smile
Couldn't help but think about you for a long, long while

I know you'll break my heart
First you're gonna leave me then you'll let me fall apart
I know you'll break my heart
With the last words that you say before you leave me with these scars

Third date we take it slow and then I steal a kiss
No-one else has ever made a kiss feel like this
Fourth time I kiss you and you take me to your room
You know I don't want to stop though it feels too soon

I know you'll break my heart
First you're gonna leave me then you'll let me fall apart
I know you'll break my heart
With the last words that you say before you leave me with these scars

First step you catch my eye
Then you flash a smile
Third step I steal a kiss
And then we both run wild

You wrote the handbook on the way to make me pay
On how to help me fly then take my wings away

I know you'll break my heart
First you're gonna leave me then you'll let me fall apart
I know you'll break my heart
With the last words that you say before you leave me with these scars
I know you'll break my heart
I know you'll break my heart

I really like the distorted guitar tone you've used here, and those verses with the big echoing chords work really well. Vocal melody on the chorus is memorable, although at times it feels like you're singing at the highest end of your range and straining a little. Your lyrical take on the challenge is interesting but it bends the rules a little too far I think, your steps are not instructions.

really like the guitar tone on this one - good and grungy

Glenn mentioned the Meow Mix thing, but this is a generic enough melodic run that it didn’t bother me even after he pointed it out and I went “oh yeah I can see that.” I liked the chorus! I thought it was catchy. This is OK, but not a standout song for me in any way, and it ended up dropping down my rankings because I didn’t feel like you had fulfilled the challenge and everyone else managed to check that checkbox. There are things that happen in sequence, and the word “handbook,” but no actual instructional steps. Was this comfortable to sing? It struck me that your voice might sound better in a somewhat lower range than where you’ve put it here; this register sounded a bit pinched.

I like the take on this challenge, similar to Balance Lost, where the steps are both instructions and a story. I don't have a lot to say, but the song feels like it's lacking some energy, and I think it's because the vocal line in the chorus is a scale down that repeats three times in two phrases. I like the sound of each phrase individually, but when they are one right after the other, I think it lulls the listener a little bit. Mixing up that melody line I think would improve this song immensely and really give it a kick of energy to put it up at the top of the pack. I hope you keep entering shadow songs so we can hear more!

first of all, just because it was made into a jingle, doesn’t mean there’s now a moratorium on repeating fa mi re do, especially since you don’t do the part of the jingle that defines it (the upward second part). Is it simple, a little much? Yes, but nothing wrong with that. Some songs are not as complex as others. This song is fine, and the playing is good, but I want more of a change up. Chunking chords with lots of echo is a cool effect. Your vocals don’t always line up with the instrumental. The title feels a little shoehorned in but the challenge is done well. I REALLY really woth you had added some vocal harmonies! I kept singing them, wishing they were there!
