House of Cards
By The Friends

there you were sitting alone, and happy
I lied and said there's nowhere else
we stayed late, until they had to close
I lied and said I've nowhere to go

Feel the earth shakin
Feeling vibration

Sliding over to join your side
Making moves without a seam
Struck out trying but that’s part of the plan
Join me in this shaky house where I am

I know I wasn't straight
and I'm feeling like a jerk about it
gold plates are all fake

Even though these walls bend and they breathe
I still invite you in

I know I wasn't straight
and I'm feeling like a jerk about it
gold plates are all fake

(fooled you, fooled me
and once again
my house of cards blows away
and I don't know what to do about it)

Singing seems uncertain during the verses. That's a hard range to sing at that dynamic level. I would have doubled it or tried to dress is up a bit more. (Reminds me a little of Neil Young and he made a career of it, so what do I know?) The part that follows the verses works better with the support vocals. The song is okay, but maybe lacking in variation - those three chords get monotonous after a while. But I can appreciate the mood you're going for. On second listen, I was more forgiving of the vocals and enjoyed the song much more. Reminds me a little of Sparklehorse.

i like the chorus better than the verses. Interesting breakdown. I like the repeated “and i don’t know what to do about it”.

The vocals feel a bit off to me; it may be pitchiness, it may be levels, it may just be the delivery in the light higher register, but it feels a bit off and takes me out of my enjoyment of the song a bit; could be the heavy reverb/delay/echo too, not sure, but could also just be me. Downtempo groove here I enjoy, cool synths, mellow guitar and drums, lot of warmth in this. Reminds me a bit of the Pillows in the guitar work here in a very good way (they did the soundtrack for the FLCL anime back in the 90's.) Descending line with the guitar and the bass in lock sounds really nice. Sounds a little muddled/muddy when the layered vocals all come in. Super cool synth solo. Lyrically it's an interesting story song, feels a little creepy, like taking advantage of someone, and that was probably the intent. I'm left wanting a bit for resolution, how did this story end? It seems like things would not have ended well.

I think of all the songs in this fight, this is the one that hits me in the feels the most and has the most memorable lead melody. It feels well formed, the breakdown isn't in your face but it definitely helps the development of the song. Probably considering the relatively slow pace of the track I wonder if even a little more dynamic change like that would have helped. The guitars and drums all sound good, but I'm concerned about the mix, which is a little thin, everything sounds a bit far away and lacks the punch of most of the other songs in the fight. I know, it's not mix fight, but these things are still a consideration. I think with more of a slick production it would've been harder for judges not to rank this highly. If there's one thing I've learned from Song Fight it's to not give people a reason to dismiss your song. I'm probably focusing on that too much, and I'm sure the strength of the song will be enough to carry it through.
