FIFTY ONE MILLION WATTS – inflatable vegetables
Thirty one white giants
Climb into the mists of Hana`ula
Wave their long arms
Try to catch the wind
Red eyes glowing brightly
Warning unsuspecting flying islands
Don’t you soar low
Or we will chop you up
I am sprinting down rocky paths
Through pastures of yellow grass
Racing the setting sun
Kaheawa
I’m stuck out here in the starlight
Hiking on a jagged lava trail
Without a flashlight
You’ve got fifty one million watts
Trapped in battered metal boxes
Fifty one million watts but you won’t share
Do you even care?
Traffic far below me
Insects on a quest for teriyaki
Climb down slowly
Shouldn’t hike alone
Suffer cuts and bruises
Try to pick my way through the kiawe
One more mile
Then biking quickly home
Caught up in harsh sun-baked beauty
Don’t give myself enough time to descend
Stumble down unstable paths
CH
SOLO
CH
You don't even care.
FYI: Kaheawa is a wind farm that cuts through the middle of one of my favorite hiking trails. I have been caught up there after sunset at least 3 times so that's a flaw in judgment.
Also, one million watts is called a megawatt, so that's two flaws right there 🙂
Mokulele - the word for airplane is literally "flying island". Kiawe is a thorny tree, like mesquite or acacia.
