That title was a challenge. It took me a long time to rustle up something in the recess of my brain for this. The lightbulb moment came when I thought about what I like to do with stones on holiday, then I thought of skimming semiprecious stones as a metaphor for throwing away money. Ironically (I think it is ironic, I was get a bit lost on the meaning and Alanis Morrisette didn't help!) after I had written this song it encouraged me to splurge on an Oculus Quest 2.

I started writing this with piano in mind but it just grew into this big guitar rock number, I was happy to let it flourish.

I keep spending my money
on the things I don't really need
I keep spending my time
on me

it feels like I'm skimming semi precious stones
it feels like I'm skimming semi precious stones

I keep spending our money
on my own little luxuries
I keep taking my time
freely

it feels like I'm skimming semi precious stones
it feels like I'm skimming semi precious stones

just hear me out
I keep telling you repeatedly

I don't really like the way you take the chorus lyrically. It veers from 70s pop-rock into Snow Patrol. But that appears to be the taste of the round so can't judge you harshly for that. Its not bad it's just not good. For some reason the dreaded phrase "Kula Shaker" keeps jumping into my head unbidden, so ...

Your vocals and arrangements have come such a long way in the last year. I love hearing your layered guitars in this track! Remember what I was saying about the piano in your "Never Odd Or Even?" This is the opposite example; a song where a lower-quality VST is just fine, because the piano is taking a back seat and serving mostly as texture. It's mixed appropriately low for that purpose. Possibly my favorite part of this song is when the band drops out for the word "freely," which emphasizes a bit of wordplay that I think I would otherwise have missed. The vocal delivery on that word also helps the trick work. I like the use of the challenge, repeated attempts to be heard. Just a great entry all around. You're one to look out for this year.

I really like the "skimming semiprecious stones" concept, smart take on the title. Good use of the repetition, and production is rock solid. I always struggle with your songs when you lean into the yarling vocal style though, it's not one of my favourite vocal styles at the best of times and when it's coming from a Brit the effect is doubled.
