This morning the British Ambassador in Berlin handed the German Government a final Note stating that, unless we heard from them by 11 o'clock that they were prepared at once to withdraw their troops from Poland, a state of war would exist between us.
I have to tell you now that no such undertaking has been received, and that consequently this country is at war with Germany."

It was bloody and it was hell. Eighty years ago.

My platoon were the best people.
We stormed the beach at sword.
Machine guns killed hundreds.
Bodies everywhere.
I was lucky to survive, though the Yanks had the worst of it

My Band of Brothers are all gone now.
I'm the last man standing.
Nobody remembers the sacrifice we made as we came out of those landing craft and onto the beach at Omaha

I dropped the ramp. The first seven or eight, nine, ten guys went down like you're cutting down wheat.
