Narrative song about a murder

LyricsShow lyrics

A hundred years and more before this country was born
On the Abenaki lands between the mountains and the corn
The springtime snows had melted but the waters still were cold
When Dick Cornish was found murdered in a shady forest shoal

And the whip-poor-will sings his tune
Under the watch of a flower moon

Katy Cornish was known for the love of drink and gentlemen
And so it was she’d lay with Mayor Garde now and then
Roger Garde cared deeply for his name and reputation
Dick Cornish came to call, demanding compensation

---

Cornish said I’m not too proud to spread word of your sin
The mayor gave him money and a promise to repent
And when Cornish turned his back, Roger Garde ran him through
And dragged him to the river, to sink in his canoe

---

They brought the widow to the scene, and testimony said
That in her presence, the body wept and bled
All the proof that any man of god could ever need
They hanged her by the river from a sugar maple tree

---

Mayor Roger Garde didn’t flinch or turn his face away
And from noon to evening twilight they left her there to sway
But he couldn’t stop the whispers, as if everyone had known
Fourteen months thereafter a fever laid him low

Really pretty instrumentation, clean, impeccably captured and your voice is dang near perfect. The very definition of a narrative about a murder. This was among the top 3 for me.
