Faster Jackalope

Entry from Shock Value in Nur Ein XIV.

Make a song with quiet and loud parts -- like every Pixies song you love. This can mean crescendos or decrescendos, sudden loud noises, whatever, just make good use of dynamics.

Faster Jackalope

Shock Value

Verse 1 (Child)
I could get piercings in every pore
You would applaud my style
Get face tattoos of black pentagrams
You’d think I’m going mild
Those old rebellions
Are just memes without humor
There’s no shock value
gen X is as bad as the boomers

Chorus (father)
Your dedicated,
Embraced conformity
Your generation
Will be the death of me

Verse 2 (child)
I could adopt a beret like Che
You’d sketch my five-year plan
I’d disappear, but my phone, I fear
Would tell you just where I am.
Your punk rock ethos
Does not make you iconoclastic
There’s no shock value
your dreams are wrapped up in plastic

Chorus (father)

half-verse 3 (child)
Thanks for the freedom
I see you’re having a moment
The real shock value
Is that you finally own it

Chorus (father)

another one with some big dynamic shifts, but the verse to chorus shift here didn't feel quite as effective as BYD, maybe because the quiet bits are already pretty compressed and loud. I quite enjoyed this one, more so the verse than the chorus and I wasn't crazy about the lyrics, but mostly I've just gotten used to Faster Jackalope blowing me away with nearly every track and this one didn't match your usual level for me.

I like the quieter acoustic parts a lot better than the loud parts; they seem a little too incongruous. The acoustic parts are great, though! Your round zero entry was one of my two favorites, by the way.

I was unimpressed. It’s an interesting idea, I can hear truths hand in the lyric writing, but I think you can do better. Well sung. Flute playing is good- didn’t know you had one! The transition to the flute is too abrupt. I need a couple of measures of polyrhythm before the tempo shift.

I liked how you used 2 different people in the story to meet this challenge. Had no issues with the vocals or music, found them both to be enjoyable enough. I honestly don’t have much feedback to give. It’s been a strong round so far, and as the rounds get tougher, the creativity you showed in meeting this challenge will probably help you when things start getting tight.

Lots of great stuff here. The verse harmonies are so sweet, and then the guitars in the enormous chorus are just out-of-control. This strong contrast is a great example of dynamics done well. The flute melody in the bridge reminds me of something that I can't quite put my finger on. Top notch yell-singing.

VERY BOMBASTIC INDEED
