Feel the warmth of summer sun.
Is it time to cast my dice?
Dare I hope that she’s the one;
Will this humble man suffice?
Give to her my household keys;
Trust her with my hearth and home.
Would she be content with me?
Does her heart more widely roam?
Sweet and lonely, true and kind—
Might our fates be intertwined?
Life is bleak when she’s away;
Wind is blowing from the east.
Every hour that I delay
Gnaws my heart without surcease.
Orphaned woman, scarred with pox,
Yet lovely as her heart is pure—
Every chime from ticking clocks
Expands my sense of her allure.
Sweet and lonely, true and kind—
Shall our lives be intertwined?
I bide my time, await her word, and offer no duress.
When weeks have passed, one morning comes, she says it’s Y E S.
From the blue, returned to her,
A lover, whom we’d thought was lost.
Life had changed in such a blur;
Suddenly, my stars were crossed.
I will not be self-deceived;
It’s for him her heart does yearn.
This painful message I’ve received,
So to him she must return.
Sweet and lonely, true and kind—
Fate had other twists in mind.
