Rear Window
by Lichen Throat, featuring Cybronica

[Verse 1: Lichen Throat]
Down at the end of the old dirt road,
Where the dusty hound dogs howl,
The yard looks like it’s never been mowed,
And the fields lie mostly fallow.
Rust coats the big old satellite dish
They installed back in ’92.
Seven years gone, but I sometimes wish
I had gone away with you.
Same old view through my rear window
Since you left for New York City.
Do you sit and sip espresso,
Dressed in style and looking pretty?

[Verse 2: Lichen Throat]
We kissed goodbye as the Greyhound left;
I knew you would not come back.
You found a job as a private chef,
While I went home to my shack.
Now you must be the talk of the town,
With a second Michelin star,
Greeting your guests in a tailored gown,
Riding home in a long black car,
Same old view through my rear window
Since you left for New York City.
Do you sit and sip espresso,
Dressed in style and looking pretty?

[Bridge: first Lichen Throat, then Cybronica]
Where are you? Where are you? Where are you now?
Where are you? Where are you? Where are you now?

[Verse 3: Cybronica]
I left New York after just a year,
And came back to Tennessee.
Now I work as a grocery cashier,
Out in Jefferson County.
I’ve thought about giving you a call,
But you can’t see me like this.
My dreams were big, but my life is small,
So I can’t bear to reminisce.
Sometimes I think I see your face
Through the rear window of my car.
Every time, it makes my heart race.
What kind of life could have been ours?

I like the take on the challenge, and the verses are mostly pretty great but that bridge that splits up the perspectives feels very… functional, rather than musically interesting.
