Gradual emphasis of repetitions

LyricsShow lyrics

Semiprecious
by Max Bomb-ass

I found a diamond in the rough
And I polished it until the dawn
But as I worked it shrank and shrank
Until the gem I found was gone
I turned it over and over again
I turned it over and over
Until there was nothing left

I came across a vein of gold
And it glittered in my sight
But as I dug it disappeared
And I could only find pyrite
I dug deeper and deeper and deeper until it was spent
It was going and going and going and then it went

So I ask myself
What I'm making may not be silver and gold
Am I taking the time to polish precious stones?

I read a letter from my past
That was sent from a different life
Before I knew what I had planned
Would never come to light
And I cried and I cried and I cried and I cried until I was dry
Now I'm asking and asking and asking and asking why

I never told myself that
What I'm making may not be silver and gold
Am I taking the time to polish precious stones?
What I'm making may not be silver and gold
Am I taking the time to polish precious stones?

I turned it over and over and over and over again
I turned it over and over and over and over until there's nothing left.

I turned it over and over and over and over and over and over and
Over and over and over and over and over and over and over again

Every time I watch one of your "making of" videos, I hear a really good riff that doesn't get pursued. Every time I hear one of your songs, I am reminded of Therapy? but would like to hear a good Therapy? song (there are some). It may be the words that bore me. Something does. Every time ... obviously I admire your obvious talent in moulding a perfect encapsulation of any song from the 90s that I hate. Ill stop now.

You didn't do a video diary for this one? (Edited after the fact to add: Hey, I found the video!) In an earlier review I mentioned how the challenge of gradual repetition could be an avenue to explore obsession, and here you've done that really well! The guitars are extra-crisp here and the drums are exemplary in both performance and mix, as I tend to expect from you. Something about that image of polishing a stone until you've worn it away just sticks with me. Yeah, this is another song I regret not ranking higher. It's short and sweet and everything about it works. Top tier of the round.

I always have a hard job knowing what to say about your songs, you're great at what you do but you tend to very much stay in your lane and it isn't really my thing, so I've probably run out of ways to phrase my biases. The guitar / bass interplay is really smart and this makes the repetition really feel like an integral part of the song.
