"Κατά τον δαίμονα εαυτού", which is inscribed on Jim Morrison's grave, may be translated as "True to your own spirit". Note, however, that a "daimon" (which is where the word "demon" comes from) is an external guiding spirit that lives within, but is not part of oneself. This spirit may be kind and loving, but not necessarily so. In the context of this song, the phrase refers to the character's turmoil and the dilemma of whether to follow or to fight the inner demon.
